International finance institution the World Bank has approved $100 million in concessional financing to improve urban transport in Dakar and secondary cities in Senegal. The funds will be provided through the International Development Association – part of the World Bank Group.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Project will link Dakar’s bus rapid transit (BRT), regional express train and restructured bus systems while professionalizing informal transport. It also includes building a second BRT line and vital infrastructure in secondary cities to reduce travel times and boost connectivity.

“By transforming urban mobility in Dakar, this project will open up economic opportunities for 3.8 million people while enabling thousands of informal sector workers to find structured employment with social protection and better career paths,” stated Keiko Miwa, Division Director-Senegal, World Bank.

The initiative supports Senegal’s Vision 2050 development plan and aims to create structured employment and improve social protections for informal sector workers.
