The United Nations (UN) and the Republic of Congo are preparing a new cooperation framework for 2027–2031 that will focus on supporting the country’s natural gas sector through technical assistance, training and cross-sector collaboration.
The plan was discussed during a meeting this month in Brazzaville between Bruno Jean Richard Itoua, Minister of Hydrocarbons of the Republic of Congo and Abdourahamane Diallo, Resident Coordinator, UN. Discussions centered on optimizing Congo’s gas reserves, estimated at 100 billion m³ and supporting the country’s goal of increasing annual liquefied natural gas (LNG) production to three million tons this year, up from 600,000 tons.
The upcoming cooperation framework will include technical training for Congolese professionals, support for gas sector research and initiatives linked to environmental protection and public health. The UN also plans to involve other relevant ministries to ensure the gas sector’s integration into broader national development efforts.
“The gas sector is essential for UN agencies, as it is a cleaner energy resource that supports our climate objectives,” Diallo said. “We identified areas where we can assist the ministry to create synergies and ensure that all contributing and consuming sectors support the development of this ecosystem.”
