Integrated LPG company Petredec has launched construction of the Tanga LPG terminal in Tanzania. Expected to be the largest LPG facility in the country once completed, the terminal is being developed in partnership with Tanzanian LPG conglomerate ASAS Group of Companies. Construction is expected to begin in the coming weeks, with production planned for 2027.
Situated in Tanga Bay, the facility comprises the development of six mounded LPG storage spheres with a capacity of 40,000 cubic meters; eight truck loading gantries; and a 2.8 km underwater pipeline. The terminal will also host facilities capable of handling Very Large Gas Carriers – currently unable to dock at Tanzania’s existing port facilities.
“In line with our aims to increase access to clean cooking for all Tanzanians, we are pleased to welcome Petredec as an investor in the LPG sector and look forward to seeing the impact their terminal will make on an already-growing market. Accelerating the next phase of growth is vital for LPG to truly reach all parts of our country and beyond,” stated Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Tanzania.
Once completed, the Tanga LPG terminal strives to become a regional LPG hub, aligning with national goals of scaling-up LPG production and distribution. The project aims to provide an alternative fuel solution for cooking in the country, reducing the reliance on biomass while monetizing domestic gas resources.
“The Tanga LPG terminal will be instrumental in helping establish Tanzania as a prominent clean energy hub in the wider East African region. We look forward to collaborating with the ASAS Group of Companies on this transformative project,” notes Jonathan Fancher, CEO, Petredec Global.
