The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has granted satellite internet company Starlink a license to operate as an internet service provider within the country.

The license was issued in accordance with current regulations following the regularization of Starlink’s administrative status. Starlink is now authorized to provide internet services across the DRC and plans to commence operations by the end of May 2025.

With only about 30% of the Congolese population having internet access as of 2023, according to the International Telecommunication Union, Starlink’s entry is expected to significantly enhance connectivity, particularly in underserved and rural areas. Starlink’s expansion into the DRC is part of its broader strategy to increase its footprint in Africa, having recently secured licenses in Somalia and Lesotho. Discussions are also underway with neighboring Uganda.

The company’s entry into the country comes as the United States and the DRC are expected to reach a multi-billion-dollar mining deal to exploit critical minerals in the eastern region of the DRC.
