Spanish energy company Repsol has resumed its exploration activities in Libya’s Murzuq Basin after a decade-long hiatus. On December 31, 2024, the company commenced drilling operations at the exploratory well designated as A1-2/130, also known as Muammal Nasr.
This well is situated approximately 800 km south of Tripoli and just 12 km from the Sharara oil field. The drilling targets the Mumaniyyat formation, with plans to reach a final depth of 1,844 m.
Libya’s National Oil Corporation has expressed optimism that the recommencement of exploration and drilling activities by major international players like Repsol will enhance oil production capabilities and support economic recovery efforts in Libya.
