Electric services company GE Vernova has completed a major upgrade of Sasol’s Secunda power plant in Mpumalanga, South Africa, aimed at enhancing performance and reducing emissions.

The upgrade – centered on two 9E gas turbines – involved the installation of GE Vernova’s advanced DLN1+ combustor technology and fuel gas module skids. These enhancements are expected to reduce nitric oxide emissions by 75%, eliminate the need for water as a diluent and lower carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 20,000 tons annually – about 10,000 tons per turbine. The improvements will also boost turbine efficiency and strengthen overall grid reliability.

“This project exemplifies our purpose to electrify the world. Building on our advanced combustion technologies, we are helping Sasol address South Africa’s energy needs more efficiently”, stated Joseph Anis, President and CEO, GE Vernova’s Gas Power business in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
