Sierra Leone to Deploy 5G, Powered by Renewable Energy
Share This Article
Internet services provider Zoodlabs has partnered with energy company CrossBoundary Energy to deploy a 5G network in Sierra Leone powered by renewable energy. The initiative will utilize solar PV, battery and generator hybrid systems to power 5G towers and achieve a 99% uptime in Freetown.
Set to enable faster data speeds, lower latency and greater connectivity in Sierra Leone, the new network circumvents the need for cable infrastructure. The 5G network will also lay the groundwork for smart cities, remote healthcare services and internet-of-things applications for local businesses.
“Our solution is designed to maximize uptime whilst increasing renewable energy penetration and minimizing diesel generator usage. The effect is that telecom operators like Zoodlabs have a reliable, affordable and cleaner way of powering their network that does not rely on utility energy or fossil fuels,” stated Oliver Benham, Director of Operations for Telecom Solutions, CrossBoundary Energy.
