Senegal has announced a series of major projects to boost the country’s phosphate sector.
Announced by Serigne Guèye Diop, Minister of Trade and Industry, Senegal, the development plans include construction of a fertilizer processing plant, aspecialized university in Danthiady, Matam and the production of phosphate fertilizers.
The facility, which serves as part of a broader initiative to create a unified center for phosphate extraction, processing and fertilizer production, will start construction this year.
Meanwhile, the university will focus on phosphate and agribusiness and offer specialized training to local youth and collaborate with the Higher Institute of Professional Education and other national universities.
The university will also host a research center dedicated to industrial innovation in fertilizers, agriculture and seed development.
A third project will focus on the production of phosphate fertilizers, which will be produced from a gas-to-power plant near Saint Louis with natural gas. The phosphate fertilizers will be used in Senegal’s agriculture sector.
“With this, Matam will become a unique hub in this country in terms of phosphates,” Minister Diop stated.
