Senegal has been placed at the top of the 2024 edition of the Electricity Regulatory Index for Africa – a performance index published by pan-African financial institution the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Released on June 20, the report assessed the regulatory frameworks of 43 African countries.
“The 2024 index shows that African regulators are stepping up. We now see stronger institutions delivering results for utilities and consumers,” said Kevin Kariuki, Vice President-Power, Energy, Climate and Green Growth, AfDB.
Kenya, Uganda, Liberia and Niger were ranked alongside Senegal among the top five. Niger showed one of the strongest improvements, underscoring the positive impact of recent reforms and political commitment to energy sector development.
The Electricity Regulatory Index is based on three main areas: governance, regulatory substance and outcomes.
