Senegal and China have signed an agreement to establish a vehicle assembly unit in Senegal as part of a broader effort to modernize the country’s transport sector.
The agreement was concluded during an official visit by Ousmane Sonko, Prime Minister, Senegal to China on June 23.
The deal involves Senegalese organizations Fonds de Développement des Transports Terrestres, the Association de Financement des Transports Urbains and state-owned China Africa Investment and Development. It outlines plans to create an industrial unit dedicated to assembling gas-powered and electric buses.
The project will be implemented in collaboration with Chinese bus manufacturer YUTONG and construction firm Zhenhuai Construction.
This initiative is part of Senegal’s national transport modernization program, which aims to gradually replace more than 40,000 vehicles used in urban and interurban transport. 6,000 of these vehicles are expected to be replaced within the next five years.
The new industrial unit is expected to support local job creation and develop assembly capabilities in Senegal while enabling the government to transition toward cleaner forms of public transportation.
