Pan-African group AXIAN has launched construction of the NEA Kolda solar power plant in southern Senegal. Once operational, the 60 MW facility, combined with a 72 MWh battery storage system, will supply electricity to over 235,000 people and improve the stability of the national grid.

Located in Tankanto Escale in the Kolda region, production and storage facilities are being built by a consortium formed by renewable energy company Voltalia and engineering firm Entech. The plant supports Senegal’s goal of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix to 40% by 2030.

The project represents a total investment of €105 million. It received €84 million in financing in October 2024 from a consortium including the Emerging Africa & Asia Infrastructure Fund, the Dutch entrepreneurial development bank FMO and the German development finance institution DEG.

The NEA Kolda project expands AXIAN Energy’s footprint in Africa, where it operates in nine countries. The company currently has 183 MW of installed capacity and is working towards reaching 1 GW by 2030.
