South African Integrated energy and chemical company Sasol has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with renewable energy producer Akuo to deliver 91 MW – around 250,000 MWh per year – of solar power to the Lake Charles Chemicals Complex in Coke County, Texas.

Solar energy under the 15-year VPPA will be sourced from Akuo’s 195 MW Tennyson solar farm, currently under construction in Coke County.

“This increased use of renewable energy, through both direct and virtual renewable power purchases at our major production sites, is a key lever in operating our facilities in a less carbon-intensive manner and meeting our goal of reducing our scope 1 and scope 2 emissions by 30% by 2030,” stated Todd Hancock, Vice President-U.S. Operations, Sasol International Chemicals.

Scheduled to begin operations in the second half of 2026, the project is set to meet roughly 50% of the Lake Charles Chemicals Complex’s energy demand, reducing Sasol’s CO2 emissions by approximately 90,000 tons per annum.
