Saipem Wins FEED Contract for Algeria Fertilizer Project
Share This Article
Italian service company Saipem has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract by Algeria’s national oil company Sonatrach for a Phosphate Integrated Project.
The contract covers the development of phosphate mining infrastructure in Bled El Hadba, fertilizer production facilities in Oued Keberit, upgrades to the Annaba export port and the construction of new railway links between key sites and the national rail network.
Once operational, the facilities will extract 10 million tons of phosphate and produce 6 million tons of fertilizers annually, supporting Algeria’s economic diversification and boosting its global position in the fertilizer market.
The contract was secured through a dual FEED competition, under which Saipem and a second operator will carry out parallel design work. Sonatrach will select the most suitable proposal based on technical and economic criteria and award the engineering, procurement and construction contract to the chosen operator.
The fertilizer production complex marks Algeria’s first integrated project combining mining and fertilizer production.
