Canadian E&P firm ReconAfrica will begin drilling its new Prospect-1 exploration well in Namibia within the next few months, according to Adam Rubin, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary of the company.

Speaking to Energy Capital & Power, Rubin said the project falls under efforts to better understand and unlock the oil and gas potential of Namibia and the wider southern African region.

The milestone will follow ReconAfrica discovering oil deposits at its recently completed drilling project at Naingopo – 1 in February 2025.

The company also signed an agreement with Angola’s National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency to explore 5.2 million acres in the Etosha-Okavango basin.

“Geology transcends the border, and we want to leverage the experience we’ve gained in Namibia and apply it just across the border in Angola,” said Rubin. He commended fiscal reforms in Angola, noting that they have created a more attractive environment for foreign companies like ReconAfrica to invest.

The company’s plans in Angola include a two-year program of geological studies, with the potential for a drilling campaign to follow, pending the acquisition of a drilling license.
