The final investment decision (FID) for the $25-billion Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) is set for December 2024, according to Mele Kyari, Head of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

The 7,000-km pipeline, conceived in 2016, aims to transport three billion cubic feet of gas per day from Nigeria’s Niger Delta region to Morocco, traversing over a dozen West African nations and potentially extending into Spain.

Kyari emphasized that the pipeline’s FID is critical for Nigeria to monetize its vast gas resources, as well as connect to existing infrastructure like the West African Gas Pipeline. The project involves regional collaboration with Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, among other key stakeholders.

“We see clear opportunities that gas creates. Today we are building a number of trunk lines and other gas infrastructure that will supply gas to a number of gas networks,” Kyari said.

Other key domestic gas-gathering projects – including the Obiafu-Obrikom-Oben pipeline and Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipeline – are nearing completion to supply gas to the NMGP.
