Namibia’s state-owned utility NamPower has officially started construction on what will be the country’s largest solar power facility – a 100 MW plant located approximately 33 kilometers northwest of the southern mining town of Rosh Pinah.

Scheduled to begin commercial operations by June 2026, the Sores Gaib Solar Power Station is expected to enhance Namibia’s energy security by expanding domestic generation capacity and reducing reliance on imported electricity and fossil fuels.

The project represents a total investment of NAD 1.6 billion ($88 million), primarily financed through a NAD 1.3 billion loan from Germany’s KfW Development Bank, with the remainder sourced from NamPower’s own capital.

NamPower has emphasized the project’s economic benefits, noting that over 300 jobs will be created during construction. The engineering, procurement and construction contractor has also pledged that 25% of the contract’s value will be directed toward local content and suppliers.

The solar plant forms part of Namibia’s broader push to diversify its energy mix and harness its renewable resources to support sustainable growth.
