State-owned Namibian Port Authority (Namport) will invest over $222 million in the first phase of a new oil and gas supply base at the Port of Lüderitz.

The development comes as Namibia shifts from offshore exploration of full-scale oil field development.

The project will include extending the berth by 500m, reclaiming 14 hectares of land, and building dedicated infrastructure for the petroleum sector. Only cargo with a turnaround time of less than 48 hours will be stored at the port.

An external operator will be appointed to manage the base in later phases, with further expansion contingent on industry demand. This operator will be responsible for investing in infrastructure such as heavy-lift cranes and warehousing facilities.

The third phase will proceed if a second oil operator reaches a Final Investment Decision or if additional offshore activity commences.

The project is part of Namibia’s shift from offshore oil exploration to full-scale field development.
