Swiss-based Mitrelli Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with America’s HYDRO-LINK for the development of a1,150-km power transmission line linking Angola and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The MoU will see Mitrelli come on board as a major investor in the $1.5 billion project, which is expected to start operations in 2029.
The power transmission line will transport electricity generated at Angolan hydropower plants to DRC mines, supporting mineral operations in the copperbelt region of southeastern DRC. This, in turn, will support the development of industrial hubs in the country, enhancing local manufacturing, mineral processing and job creation.
“Angola and the DRC’s minerals are essential commodities in today’s global economy and they drive the technology of the future. Today, the DRC’s mining sector is being constrained by unreliable electricity supplies, and together with Mitrelli, HYDRO-LINK will help improve output by providing reliable, affordable power,” stated Paul Hinks, Chairman and CEO of HYDRO-LINK.
The agreement follows a deal signed between HYDRO-LINK and engineering firm Sargent & Lundy, with the company set to provide engineering services for the transmission project. While the project is designed to support mining operations, extended connections will enable communities in Angola and the DRC to access electricity via the line.
“This partnership with HYDRO-LINK is a strategic move to jointly advance the regional economy and reflects our long-standing commitment to sustainable development in Africa. Beyond enabling trade and industrial growth, we believe infrastructure must serve the people, ensuring that energy access empowers communities, supports local development and creates new opportunities for the millions living along this vital route in Angola,” added Haim Taib, Founder and President, Mitrelli Group.
