Mauritania’s national mining company Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM) and electricity utility Société Mauritanienne de l’Électricité (SOMELEC) have signed Heads of Terms for two Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with the TAQA Arabia–Go Gas Holding consortium. The agreements represent the next phase of the Banda gas-to-power project, with first gas and incremental power generation expected for late-2028.

Under the terms of the agreements, the consortium will replace heavy fuel oil with natural gas from the Banda field to generate more than 150 MW of electricity. TAQA Arabia – through its subsidiary Rosetta – will lead the downstream gas distribution in the form of mobile LNG to support industrial and mining sectors.

“Signing these PPAs marks a significant lead toward enhancing Mauritania’s energy security and economic growth. As the first integrated gas-to-power project in the country, Banda exemplifies our commitment to driving Africa’s energy transition,” stated Khaled Kacem, CEO, GoGas Upstream.

The agreements secure the offtake of at least 60 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas from the Banda field, supporting the development of a planned 300 MW combined cycle plant.
