Ghana aims to begin operations at its first nuclear facility by the early-2030s according to Robert Sogbadji, Deputy Director, Nuclear and Alternative Energy of the Ministry of Energy in Ghana, Preparatory work for the development of the facility is already underway and the country is pursuing a power purchase agreement.
“Without nuclear, we cannot transition to net zero. We aim to start operations at the nuclear power plants by the early 2030s,” Sogbadji said in Cape Town on Wednesday.
The country is exploring various nuclear solutions, including GW-scale facilities and floating nuclear projects. A site selection process was completed in early-2025 by the International Atomic Energy Agency, with the organization confirming that the selection was well-designed and prepared.
In addition to traditional nuclear facilities, Ghana is exploring the deployment of floating nuclear. Sogbadji explained that “currently, the floating plant has been brought to the attention of the highest authorities of Ghana and we will be engaging further to see how we can deploy floating nuclear. We want to deploy this technology quickly. We have a similar project, Karpowership, which is an example of floating mechanisms. We are looking forward to seeing a good deal established for a power purchase agreement.”
