Energy company Galp has announced a significant oil and gas discovery at the Mopane-3X well in Namibia’s offshore PEL 83 license. The well, spudded on January 2, has been successfully drilled, cored and logged.

Galp’s drilling campaign targeted two stacked prospects, AVO-10 and AVO-13, along with a deeper sand reservoir, in water depths of up to 1,200 meters. Preliminary data from AVO-10 confirmed substantial columns of light oil and gas condensate within high-quality sandstones, while light oil columns were also identified in AVO-13 and the deeper sand intervals.

Samples from the prospects have been sent for lab testing, and acquired data will be integrated into the reservoir model to inform potential future development. Meanwhile, a 3D seismic acquisition campaign is underway and is expected to be completed by Q1 2025.

Drilling operations at Mopane-3X were carried out using Saipem’s Santorini drillship as part of Galp’s second exploration and appraisal campaign on Blocks 2813A and 2914B.

Galp operates PEL 83 with an 80% stake, while Namibia’s national oil company NAMCOR and independent explorer Custos Energy each hold a 10% interest.
