Global energy major bp has shipped the first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) Phase 1 project, located offshore Mauritania and Senegal.
The LNG was transferred from the project’s floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) vessel, situated approximately 10 km offshore, and loaded onto the 173,400-m3 British Sponsor. The shipment marks the start of production of the GTA FLNG facility.
“This first cargo from Mauritania and Senegal marks a significant new supply for global energy markets. Starting exports from GTA Phase 1 is an important step for bp and our oil and gas business as we celebrate the creation of a new production hub within our global portfolio,” stated Gordon Birrell, EVP Production & Operations, bp.
Straddling the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania, the GTA project is one of the deepest offshore gas developments in Africa, with gas reserves located at water depths reaching up to 2,850 m. Once fully operational, the GTA development is expected to produce around 2.4 million tons of LNG annually.
