Renewable energy firm AMEA Power has been awarded two standalone Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects – Gainfar and Boitekong – through Bid Window 2 of South Africa’s Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme.

Both projects, located in the North West Province, will have a capacity of over 300MWh each and will connect to Eskom’s grid via the Ngwedi and Marang substations.

“These projects represent our first successful awards of BESS projects through a competitive bidding process and underscore our commitment to providing sustainable, resilient and cost-effective energy solutions,” said Hussain Al Nowais, Chairman of AMEA Power.

The projects will supply power and ancillary services to Eskom under 15-year Power Purchase Agreements, strengthening grid stability and supporting South Africa’s renewable energy goals.

This announcement builds on AMEA Power’s earlier success with the 120MW Doornhoek Solar PV Project, awarded through Bid Window 6 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme, which is currently under construction.
