Multilateral financial institution the African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $144 million loan to support Niger’s Energy Sector Governance and Competitiveness Support Program.

The initiative aims to strengthen energy legislation, address power deficit and improve financial management in the sector by boosting revenue generation, clearing domestic arrears and enhancing tax control systems.

“This program represents our commitment to supporting Niger’s economic recovery and energy independence,” said Lamin Barrow, AfDB’s Director General for West Africa.

Niger aims to increase national electricity access from 22.5% to 30% by 2026, raise manufacturing’s share to GDP growth from 2.5% to 3.8% and attract up to $527 million in private sector investment by 2030.

The country also plans to develop 240 MW of solar capacity, with 50 MW scheduled to come online before December 2026, as part of the program. The AfDB’s support is expected to support these commitments.
